Inspired by the Coke and toast addicts over at eSpace Solutions I thought it would be a good idea to regularly write about my workspace – the workshop every week.

This is the door to my workshop. This is how I acquired it three years ago and I like the shabby flaky paint appearance. I remember when we first moved in, about four of our friends photographed this door so I guess I’m not the only one that thinks it has a bit of character.

The workshop did also have a window but as you can see thats been consumed with ivy. As I’m curious to see how far the ivy will grow I haven’t cut it back this year.

Arduino Morse Code Garden Lamp

I took my existing arduino Morse code translator and installed it into a garden lamp. The with a bit of coding got my iPhone talking to it so that you can type your message into the phone and the lamp will translate it for you.

Arduino Morse Code Translator

Well I’m discovering that my arduino is still a great deal of fun but also the fact that the code (it uses a version of C) is a little tricky for a beginner like me. Thanks to Google Books I’m slowly grasping the basics. I was looking for a little project to get my teeth into and decided on making a Morse code translator.

It took a couple of evenings and 200 lines of code but its there. Its messy and I’m certain it could be rewritten with half the lines but it works.

Although on a small breadboard, this could so easily be scaled up to something on par with the messenging towers one saw in Going Postal. I’m adding it to ‘my end of the world’ kit when the internet and all other forms of communication are brought down. It would be nice to have the workshop transmitting Morse from the roof.

The Blink of an Eye

Theres a nice little exhibition on in the centre of this small city of ours. Once you enter you are greeted by this rather curious eyeball. When you pass by it, a little electromagnet works the lever connected to the eyelid resulting in the eye blinking at you.

I must have passed it about 30 times!
